In the Urban Fabric of Leh

I have been looking at the relationship of activities both vertically and horizontally found in the urban fabric of Leh. Similar activities tend to establish street front space in similar ways. I am also exploring the characters present in these activities.

Ground Level

On the Ground level the streets seem truly alive. The cars are aggressive, yet respectful of life. The cars move into every space possible to get ahead of the person in front of them. Cars, mopeds, and motorcycles control the road aside from cows. The drivers communicate to each other through the honking of their horns. When a driver is passing, or they want to pass, they send out a honk, and the driver in front usually pulls slightly to the side providing enough room for a driver to pass by.

Middle Level

The middle level has become a secondary stage for businesses and restaurants to thrive.

Upper Levels

The upper levels are often rented space for both offices, residences, and sometimes even more businesses. On top of the buildings there is an amazing collage of clothes that are hanging out to dry. The rooftops are also places of storage. Since it doesn’t rain very much, it is generally safe for storage.

Background

Wherever you look in Leh there is an abundance of beauty. Not because the streets are so full of life, but because the surroundings are breathtaking. Everywhere there are mountains. The mountains have a very calming affect.

  2. The description and visuals make me feel I am there. I can only imagine how colorful it is with all the clothes blowing in the wind overhead. Roberta C.
